Opportunities

Summer Academics Tutor

Building on the foundation laid by our Homework Plus program, Summer Academics offers students a unique opportunity for one-on-one math, English, and reading assistance. This service aims to give each child a personal experience of academic success, enhancing their self-esteem and developing confidence and motivation to learn. The one-to-one tutoring using the Summer Solution curriculum ensures that each child experiences academic success, providing a strong foundation for learning retention between school years. Summer Academics is offered four days a week every June from 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Students receive breakfast and lunch!

Early Learning Aid

The Early Learning Program addresses the need for pre-reading and kindergarten readiness skills among underserved children in Kenton, Campbell, and Boone counties, with the long-term goal of improving educational attainment. NDUEC uses an evidence-based curriculum for pre-literacy, numeracy, and cultural enrichment for pre-k children. This program serves children ages four to five from low-income families and meets four days a week from 7:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., September through May, each academic year.

We need volunteers who can commit to one morning a week for the entire school year.

Homework Plus Tutor

The Homework Plus program was created to address educational inequalities for students in grades K-8 by providing one-on-one tutoring utilizing adult and high school volunteers. This program serves children four days a week from 2:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. throughout the academic year and features three components: homework, individualized tutoring, and enrichment.

  • Homework: Our volunteer tutors spend a minimum of one session working with each student, providing homework assistance, reading/writing support, and educational skill-building activities.
  • Individualized Tutoring: Our volunteer tutors use direct intervention for academic skill-building based on students’ needs.
  • Enrichment: NDUEC staff engage students in STEM principles and concepts, art, music, current events, fun trivia, board games, billiards, basketball, and various planned activities.

About us

The Notre Dame Urban Education Center, founded on May 22, 2009, by the Sisters of Notre Dame, USA, has been a beacon of hope in Northern Kentucky’s urban core since it opened its doors to students in the summer of 2010. Our distinct approach to education, which includes an integrated educational support system, has not only strengthened individuals and families but also inspired them to develop their talents, continue their education, and actively contribute to the community. Our four transformative educational programs are designed to provide a holistic learning experience that transcends the boundaries of the classroom.

At NDUEC, we are committed to doing more than just traditional learning. As an educational hub, we aim to unlock the potential of the future by providing unique curricula that address racial and economic disparities. We focus on serving the urban community through collaborative programs that foster academic and personal development for children and their families. We design our programs to ensure a fulfilling experience for all participants.

To bridge the opportunity gap for underprivileged students and promote academic success, NDUEC offers an extended school day menu of expanded learning activities in a safe, nurturing, drug-free environment through its educational programs, which include Early Learning, Homework Plus, Summer Academics, and Family Support.

The work of NDUEC is not just about following the best practices in education; it’s about a team of dedicated individuals. Our small staff, which includes master-level teachers with over 130 years of combined experience in education, and our 275+ volunteers, who are working or retired professionals and local high school students, are the heart and soul of our organization. Their commitment and passion are what make NDUEC stand out.
