Suzanne Burke, President and CEO of Council on Aging of Southwestern Ohio, will be honored by 55 North at its North Star Soirée on Thursday evening, November 3 at the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza. Burke is being recognized for her leadership and collaboration to help keep our community’s older adults safe and receiving vital information during the more than two years of the pandemic. Elizabeth Bangel-Stehlin is chair of this year’s annual North Star Soirée, the first in-person fundraising event held by 55 North since 2019. Bangel-Stehlin is a Cincinnati native who’s been working with seniors and senior living for over 25 years. In her current position, she serves as Senior Director of Sales and Marketing for Seasons Retirement Community in Kenwood. The annual event builds on 55 North’s nearly 50-year history of supporting older adults in their homes, keeping them active, independent, and connected to the community. Soirée participants will celebrate older adults and caregivers, while raising funds to support 55 North’s essential support services, including a handicapped-accessible van to transport program participants to and from doctor appointments, social outings and grocery shopping. “Suzanne Burke made sure our seniors were not forgotten during the pandemic shutdown. She worked with 55 North and other local social safety net services to make sure older adults had meals, transportation to medical appointments and vaccines, whatever they needed to stay safe during isolation,” said Shelley Goering, CEO of 55 North. “Suzanne is our hero, and we are proud to honor her and the Council on Aging’s 50 years of service to our community,” Goering added. Suzanne Burke is among the most active advocates in Ohio’s aging network, meeting regularly with legislators, local elected officials, and community groups in southwestern Ohio to keep them informed on aging issues and the need for reform of Ohio’s long-term care system. She is past President of the Board of the Ohio Association of Area Agencies on Aging.
