Child Care for NKY Scholar House
Passionate and dedicated volunteers are critical to the success of our program! Do you love children? We’re looking for experienced volunteers to help care for our children while their parents attend classes during the day and life skills workshops in the evening. Our daycare is open Monday-Friday from 6:00 am-6:00 pm, and we also look for volunteers weekday evenings several times a month from 5:30-8:30. We’ll provide training to ensure a positive and meaningful experience, and we ask that volunteers to commit to volunteer for at least 6 sessions.
The program strives to support single parents enrolled in post-secondary education on their journey to self-sufficiency. By providing access to affordable housing, quality child care, and support services, NKY Scholar House eliminates many of the barriers single parents face in reaching their academic and financial dreams. NKY Scholar House uses a unique two-generation approach providing services to both the parent and their children. NKY Scholar House readies individuals to enter the workforce while simultaneously setting children up for success in school. Research shows this holistic approach works to promote self-sufficiency across generations.
Homeward Bound Shelter Volunteer
Homeward Bound (Covington) is an Emergency Shelter for teens ages 11-17 that are homeless or have run away or have been removed from their home due to unsafe conditions. They stay with us short-term to determine their next best place to reside. Homeward Bound is the only emergency shelter for teens in Northern Kentucky and the only one in Kentucky that allows walk-ins. Within three weeks we work to have our teens connected with their next permanent placement.
Interacting with our teens through your group is an easy way to make a huge difference in the lives of our teens. Every Thursday, we like to offer our teens a chance to participate in activities organized by volunteers. Groups can host game nights, play video games, and cook and eat with youth. In the past, groups have hosted pizza parties, sororities have led makeup nights, and our boys have been taken to the local gym. You and your group can help one-time, or schedule a recurring visit, like the first Thursday of the month. Staff are always in sight. This is a wonderful way to brighten the lives of our teens.
Youth Leadership Development VolunteerYouth Leadership Development (YLD) is an after-school program for at-risk youth ages 11-15 to build leadership skills and conduct community service projects. Youth who are not already involved in positive after-school activities and therefore most at-risk are recruited to join YLD through their schools. Groups are held twice a week from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm in grades six through eight. As a volunteer in our program, you help in a variety of ways. Volunteers support the facilitator, do one on one tutoring, and/or support group activities. You are welcome to join us as frequently as twice a week; if time is tighter, you could visit us once per month. We offer a lot of flexibility so that what you choose fits your schedule best. YLD is currently in Campbell County Middle School, Dayton Schools, Holmes Middle School in Covington, Tichenor Middle School in Erlanger, Newport Middle School.
