Way to Help Title Way to Help Content You truly must witness the expressions from the students as they meet their mentors each day. The Al Hampton Mentoring Program is an academically structured program that pairs a student with a mentor from the community. The program services students in grades first through fourth. There are seven, 30-minute sessions a day beginning at 8:00 a.m. Monday through Thursday. We ask our mentors to give 30 minutes a week, but often, our mentors stay for more than one session. Our mentors need no background check and all work is prepared in individual binders for each student. There is an entrance directly into the Hampton Mentoring Room and the students are brought into the room so it is very convenient. The Hampton Program boasts Mentors who have generously given of their time for over ten, fifteen, and twenty years! They are truly amazing, dedicated people. The program coordinator, a twenty-year veteran of teaching, has never seen such a successful, motivational program that affects academic success. Besides progress and growth, the students’ behavior and attendance are better. It is difficult to put into words the sense of trust and respect that the students have for their mentors. The relationships that are formed are touching. A “five year” mentor mentioned that she gets so much more out of mentoring than she feels like she gives. Another mentor stated that the 30 minutes he spent at Oyler was the best 30 minutes of his week. The mentors, with their one-on-one attention, make a huge difference in the lives of our children.
