The board is the trustee of the mission of our 120+ year old organization and the link between the organization and the ownership--those to whom we are accountable for our work. The Board is the governing body for the organization, establishes the agency Ends policy and other governance policies, and supports the CEO's leadership of the organization. All Board members serve on one of three committees: Governance, Audit or Development. The board governs with an emphasis on an outward and future vision rather than internal preoccupation. It encourages diversity of viewpoints and focuses on strategic leadership rather than administrative detail. Board decisions are made collectively rather than individually. Board Requirements The expectations of Board members include: 1. Produce, review and monitor compliance with written Board governance policies. 2. Evaluate CEO Performance. 3. Monitor the Board's own performance. 4. Be present and engaged at board meetings - six per year. 5. Participate in one of three Board committees (Governance, Development, Audit). 6. Make a personally sacrificial gift the the agency's Annual Fund. Onboarding Prospective Board members are typically nominated by other board members, former Board members, community leaders or staff. Depending on the candidate's familiarity with the agency, the candidate may meet with the Board Chair and/or CEO for an exploratory meeting to learn more about the agency and the expectations of Board members. Interested, prospective Board members complete a profile/application. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Completed applications are submitted to the Board Governance Committee for review and then forwarded to the full Board for approval at the next regular Board meeting. Newly elected Board members participate in an on-boarding session with Board and staff leadership that includes a review of the organization, Board governance policies, and established procedures. We also offer for all new Board members a driving tour of the Price Hill area and of all of the agency's facilities in the Price Hill area. The tour is led by our seasoned CEO, who is also a longtime resident of Price Hill. Please contact for more information. We require a specific amount of “give or get” for all board members. We strive for 100% board giving, but have no strict guidelines around financial contributions. -- Parent -- Add New Additional donation expectation information Board members are expected to make a personally sacrificial financial gift to the agency’s Annual Fund. Santa Maria does not request a specific amount of donation. The amount is left entirely to the discretion of the Board member. The objective is to demonstrate to outside funders that we have 100% commitment from our Board members. In addition, Board members are expected to participate in other fundraising efforts of Santa Maria. There are dozens of ways Board members participate, which can include making follow-up "thank you" calls to donors, going out for solicitation/cultivation visits (with or without staff members), providing leads/information on potential funders/major donors, etc. We ask that while individuals serve on Santa Maria’s board that they make Santa Maria one of their top three places for charitable giving.
